Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts that your dentist surgically positions under your gums and into your jawbone. They are used to support prosthetic teeth that replace missing teeth, such as bridges or dentures. Since implants fuse to your jawbone, they offer excellent support for artificial teeth. Replacement teeth mounted to implants won't move around in your mouth.

How does a dental implant procedure work?

Your dentist numbs the treatment site then creates a tiny guide hole with a small surgical drill in your jawbone. This allows them to thread a small implant cylinder into place. The sterile piece settles into a precise location, and a smooth cover protects the implant during the healing period.

You do not necessarily need a dental implant for every single one of your missing teeth. Four strategically placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom can restore your full smile.

After your implants are in place, your dentist puts your temporary prosthetic teeth on your implants that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. In all, the procedure takes between two to three hours.

What happens after a dental implant procedure?

Any discomfort after you return home, such as minor bruising or mild pain, can typically be treated with over-the-counter medication.

Implants can’t withstand normal bite forces right away. It takes three to six months as implants integrate into your jawbone. In most cases, you will only experience minimal discomfort after implant placement. However, your dentist will likely recommend avoiding hard foods.

Once your dentist deems your implants stable at a post-op exam, you are ready for your permanent teeth. Gateway Smiles offers “teeth in one day” for implants. Using advanced 3D CT imaging of your teeth, your dentist creates and places your permanent replacement teeth on your implants. These take the place of your temporary prosthetic teeth.

How long do dental implants last?

Titanium dental implants are lifelong restorations. As long as you maintain good oral hygiene habits after getting implants, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to reap the benefits of a revitalized smile for many years to come.
